Coloring with Distress Products - Tim Holtz - Ranger Ink

Hello friends! I've been thinking about coloring with all the different Tim Holtz Distress products and how they look different. So I decided to do some experimenting and find out the differences of the products. After a few tests I realize my favorite way to color is not really my favorite. Let's get started. I stamped the same flower on to Distress Watercolor Cardstock and I also used the same colors and technique when coloring. This will be the truest test.

Distress Products used....
Distress Watercolor Pencils
Distress Ink
Distress Oxide Ink
Distress Crayons
Distress Reinkers
Distress Spray Stain
Distress Oxide Sprays

Colors used.....
Picket Raspberry
Fossilized Amber
Mustard Seed
Mowed Lawn
Rustic Wilderness
Vintage Photo

Stamp your image with a waterproof ink like Archival Ink in Black Soot.
This Stamp set is CMS487 and it has several flowers that could be used.

Distress Watercolor Pencils
These have been a favorite since they came out. They are easy to use and give great results. I colored the image with the pencils and then blended with a waterbursh. Dry with a heat tool and then add more color where desired. I also splattered colors in the background for fun.
Findings - Easy to use and the results are great. They are a little chalky.

Distress Ink Pads
I applied the Inks to my Glass Mat and the picked up the color with the waterbrush.
Findings - The color is not as strong as I like but it works well.
You could add more layers for more intense color.

Distress Oxide Ink Pads
Apply the inks to your Glass Mat and pick them up with a waterbrush. Color as desired.
Findings - The Oxides are a softer look and covers the stamped image a little.

Distress Crayons
Color the Crayons on to the Glass Mat and pick color up with the Waterbrush and color as desired.
Findings - I like the look of this and the color is vibrant.

Distress Reinkers
Add 1-2 drops of reinkers to the Glass Mat and color with a Waterbrush as desired.
I think this was my favorite!
Findings - The color is very vibrant and doesn't effect the stamped image.

Distress Spray Stains
Take the dropper out of the bottle and tap a few drops on to the Glass Mat pick up color with the Waterbrush. Color as desired.
Findings - Although the color is vibrant it a little watery and had a tendency to spread out side the stamped lines. Drying more often will help with this.

Distress Oxide Sprays
Take dropper out of the bottle and tap a few drops on to the Glass Mat, pick up color with the Waterbrush. Color as desired.
Findings - The color is very chalky and covers the stamped image. you could go back and stamp the image again over the coloring. I do like the softness of the color.

Here is a closer look. Some of the changes are very subtle but it's great information. I'm going to put them on a ring and keep them handy to reference the next time I color images.

I hope you find the information helpful, I know I do!

Creative time with Distress Spray Stains and Distress Spritz

Hello friends! Today I took a break to just play with Distress Spray Stains and Distress Spritz. I had so much fun just trying different ways to use these two amazing products together.
A few facts about the sprays....Distress Spray Stain is a highly pigmented spray and comes in 76 colors.
Distress Spritz is a pearlized pigment in a clear fluid and comes in 36 different colors.

Cardstock
What kind of cardstock you use makes all the difference.
My favorites are Distress Watercolor Cardstock and Mixed Media Heavystock.

Here are a few tips when using sprays.
I like to use a Splat Box with a paper towel under my cardstock to help with the overspray.
Have extra paper towels or a cloth to blot off excess spray.
Add a little spray of water to help blend the colors or create a muddled effect.

Here I've created a blended background using the Spray Stains.
Dry with a heat tool and blot off excess ink on the edges.
Position stencil over the background and use the coordinating colors of Spritz to spray through the stencil. Carefully remove stencil and dry with a heat tool.

I wish you could see the shimmer! I love how the shimmers shows up so beautifully.

Another color combo

Stamp image on Mixed Media Cardstock with a waterproof ink.
Spray a few colors on to your mat, pick up color with waterbrush and color image.
Dry with a heat tool.
Color with Distress Spritz using the coordination color.

Add a little color and stamping in the background around the stamped image.
Stamp some script with Archival ink.
Add a little splatter with Spray Stain and Spritz.
I love how the Fossilized Amber Distress Spritz show off like gold shimmer.

Here are a few samples of Monoprinting with a stencil.
Spray Stencil with Spray Stain and then spray Distress Spritz over the coordinating color.
Carefully and slowly flip the stencil over and gently place it on the cardstock.
Blot with a paper towel gently rubbing the whole stencil.
Remove the stencil slowly and dry with a heat tool.

Coloring with Spray Stain and Spritz is a favorite of mine because the colors are so vibrant.
Die cut your favorite flowers or images.
Spray a few colors on to your mat, pick up color with waterbrush and color the die cut image.
Dry with a heat tool.
Color with Distress Spritz using the coordination color.

I hope you will spend some time creating and exploring with Distress Spray Stains and Distress Spritz. and we didn't even talk about Distress Oxide Sprays. I'll have to have another play date!

Free to Imagine Card! New Tim Holtz Stamps

Hello friends! I'm back with a new card from the Stampers Anonymous fall release from Tim Holtz. I loved this stamp set the first time I laid eyes on it. The images are so beautifully detailed. If your didn't see the Tim Holtz Facebook Live video be sure to check it out, the cards and projects were stunning and so inspirational.

I really like all the textures this card has....the crackled texture paste, the script text in the background and of corse the beautiful butterfly.

First I positioned my stencil on to Media Heavystock and taped it down with removable tape.   Next I forgot to take a picture but I added the Crackle Paste with a palette knife. TIP: When I put the Crackle Paste on I only swipe in one direction to help prevent seeping underneath the stencil. Next carefully remove the stencil and then set aside to air dry.

Stamp butterfly with Black Soot Archival Ink on to Watercolor cardstock, (ink must be waterproof) Color with Distress Ink and a Waterbrush.

Add color as desired layering as needed being sure to dry between layers.

Once the Crackle Paste is dry spray with Distress Spray Stains and a little water to help the ink flow and blend, repeat as needed drying between layers.

Adhere vintage lace as desired to 6 1/4" x 4 1/2" base card.

Stamp background with a script stamp using Frayed Burlap Distress Ink. Layer with black cardstock and add stitching as desired. Sew a few buttons to the corner. Adhere background piece to card. Wrap twine around card and tie with a bow.

Love the detail of the buttons sewn on the card and look at the yummy cracked texture.

Cut out the butterfly with scissors. Adhere butterfly with foam tape on the outer portions of the wings and adhere body directly to card with Distress Collage Medium.

Add the word "imagination" to the center of the butterfly and adhere with foam tape.

Color the metal flower with Alcohol Pearl Inks and adhere to card at twine bow.

Snowglobe Shaker Card - Tim Holtz Sizzix Alterations

Hello all! Do you remember being a kid and loving Snowglobes at Christmastime? I sure do, I still have some and look forward to displaying them during the holidays. Tim Holtz has a beautiful Thinlits die called Snowglobe and it takes me back to my childhood.

Love the details of the houses, they even have doors and windows. No scene would be complete without a few trees and some snowcap mountains. And even little tiny stars to go with the trees or you can put them in the sky like I did.

For our card position the Sizzix Alterations Snowglobe die over the cardstock and tape in position to die cut the shape. Love this years Paper Stash called Tidings the soft greens and reds give this paper line a vintage feel that perfect for Christmas.

Apply Picket Fence Distress Crayon to the edge of the Snowglobe opening and smudge with you finger to blend out the edges. The Picket Fence edges will add a little glow around the Snowglobe.

Cut a piece of acetate to cover the opening and adhere with Glossy Accents. Be sure to get the Glossy Accents close to the die cut edge.

Add foam tape around the edge of the Snowglobe. Tip: if you remove the paper backer from the tape it's much easier to add the tape on the cured areas. Add a second layer of foam tape to create depth. Optional: Sew around the edge of the card.

Apply Distress Crayon to the inside of the Snowglobe and smug with your finger, add a little water to you finger if needed to help the crayon spread out. Chipped Sapphire makes it look like a night sky.

Die cut and assemble the houses, trees and the snowcap mountains. The die cuts all the pieces you need. The windows are a little rectangle that fits behind all the houses perfectly. The trees and mountains have a scoreline to add shape. Add Distress Ink with an Ink Blending Tool to the edges as desired.

Die cut the Base of the Snowglobe from Woodgrain cardstock. Spray Antique Linen Distress Spray Stain over the base of the Snowglobe and let dry. Ink with Vintage Photo Distress Ink with an Ink Blending Tool.

Add all the layers together. Leave a small opening at the top of the Snowglobe to add the Distress Glitter. I left a piece of the tape backing at the top so it wouldn't stick together. Add Rock Candy Distress Glitter inside the SnowGlobe. Once you have the right amount seal the card.

Die cut the "Wish" from silver Deco Sheet that has been mounted to a piece of cardstock using the Vintage Tidings Thinlits die. Embellish the card with Metallic Trimmings and a Adornment Snowflake, Holiday Talk Metallic Stickers and a few Mini Fasteners.

Who wouldn't love to receive a special card like this?
